A security barrier may carry an impressive rating, but what does that rating actually prove for your project? HVM impact testing demonstrates performance under one defined combination of vehicle type, mass, impact speed, angle and installation condition. It is evidence—not a promise that every site configuration will behave identically.
What the rating records
ISO 22343-1:2023 specifies impact-performance requirements, a vehicle-impact test method and a performance rating for vehicle security barriers. ASTM F2656/F2656M similarly provides a structured procedure for establishing penetration ratings for perimeter barriers.
In practice, HVM impact testing records whether the tested barrier stops or controls the vehicle under the stated test conditions. Penetration distance is central, while the complete report can also document barrier behaviour, vehicle response, debris and the tested foundation arrangement.
Why site conditions still matter
A rated bollard, blocker or gate does not work in isolation. Foundation depth, reinforcement, soil assumptions, anchorage, spacing and interfaces with surrounding structures can all affect installed performance. Procurement teams should therefore compare the tested configuration with the actual site design—not only the headline rating.
Reduce redesign risk before the physical test
GloBAS Engineering supports vehicle-impact and crash simulation, structural strength and deformation assessment, material and thickness optimisation, and validation of foundations and anchorage designs. This engineering work can help manufacturers and project teams identify weak points, compare design options and prepare a more robust configuration before committing to physical testing.
HVM impact testing is most valuable when the rating, test report and real installation are reviewed together. If you are preparing a barrier design or checking whether a tested solution fits a specific project, an early engineering review can reduce uncertainty and costly iteration.
