Patran

Simulate and analyze complex interaction of fluids and structures

Patran is an integrating environment and graphical shell for MSC Nastran, Marc, Dytran, MSC Sinda and other finite element analysis systems. Patran provides import of geometric models from CAD systems, creation of calculation models, running them for calculation, graphical representation and processing of the obtained results. The ability to use material data is provided through a direct interface with the Mvision system.

Patran software package is known worldwide as the most versatile, reliable, efficient and powerful universal graphical interface designed for preparation of calculation models and processing of calculation results.

Patran provides integration of geometric and finite element modeling systems, analysis and processing of calculation results and is designed for in-depth performance studies and optimization of products at design, production and operation stages.

Patran provides powerful capabilities for importing geometric models from CAD systems, creating and editing geometry, generating finite-element grids, preparing and configuring calculation models, and handling calculation results through a configurable graphical interface and an interactive help system.

Patran includes extensive functions for creating and modifying geometric models, including solid modeling and Boolean operations, creation of median surfaces, automatic recognition and parameterization of holes, roundings and chamfers.

Powerful tools for fast creation, editing, quality control and optimization of finite-element (FE) meshes make it possible to create required design models in a short time. Along with standard mesh generators, Patran includes specialized 2D surface mesh generators such as AdvancedSurfaceMesher, Midsurface and SheetBodyMesher, which enable the creation of high-quality FE meshes on a set of surfaces of any complexity and of “bad” quality in terms of FE mesh generation. Geometric models of this type are often encountered when modeling airplanes, cars, ships, railroad transport and other, mostly shell-shaped products of complex shape. To work with meshes on solid 3D geometry Patran provides an extensive list of tools allowing to obtain in the shortest possible time a computational QE model that takes into account all the many structural elements, including chamfers, roundings, recesses, holes and so on. In addition Patran has other unique capabilities in the field of working with PE grids. For example, it generates QE meshes based on other QE meshes without using geometric models, as well as creating geometry on shell QE meshes (an operation inverse to creating QE meshes on surfaces).

Patran provides an extensive and easy-to-use set of tools for specifying various loads, boundary conditions, material properties and finite elements, calculation parameters, as well as for processing, converting and visualizing calculation results. Loads, boundary conditions and finite element properties can be attached to the geometry as well as directly to the QE grid.

Built-in Patran tool for working with the calculation model in graphic interactive mode – ModelBrowser (“model tree”) allows the most effective and fast management of geometry, material and element properties, loads, boundary conditions and calculation cases. Simple and visual work with the model by means of the ModelBrowser considerably raises efficiency and speed of creation of design models and provides possibility to eliminate errors at preparation of difficult design cases, for example, at formation of chains from various types of calculation for the complex or multidisciplinary analysis.

The Groups, Lists and Superelements functions allow you to create and process full-size detailed models of complex structures such as an airplane, car, etc. based on millions of finite elements. These functions, as well as standard Patran interfaces, are widely used when conducting international projects simultaneously by several companies or when organizing work at distributed workplaces when conducting large projects within a single enterprise.

The display of calculation results using advanced visualization tools in the form of fills, isosurfaces, vectors, tensors, deformed states, graphs, reports, and other built-in visualization tools helps accelerate the evaluation of calculation results and improve their quality. Patran provides the ability to convert results to any local coordinate system, either Cartesian, cylindrical or spherical. Calculation results in Patran can be added, subtracted, multiplied by any number, get their linear combination, find minimum and maximum values, etc. This allows the user to create new results in Patran based on existing calculation results without running the solver additionally. In addition, Patran’s internal tools provide the ability to perform mathematical operations on the components of the calculation results. For example, it is possible to calculate equivalent stress values from the components of the stress tensor using any formula.

Integration with CAD systems
In addition to access to standard geometric formats such as Parasolid, ACIS, STEP, IGES, STL, VDA, etc., Patran provides direct access to the most popular CAD systems: CATIA, NX, Creo and SOLIDWORKS. When using Patran, it is usually CAD geometry that becomes the basis of the finite element model. Therefore Patran includes special methods and functions for control and automated correction of imported models.

Integration with analysis systems
With the appropriate settings, Patran provides model preparation and results processing for a large number of analysis systems. Interfaces for MSC Nastran, Marc, Dytran, MSC Fatige, Sinda, LS-Dyna, Pam-Crach, Ansys and Abaqus are implemented. The powerful capabilities of the PCL language also allow users to incorporate their own applications into the Patran environment, making Patran the foundation for developing an open MCAE environment. Patran provides a number of additional advanced tools for working with MSC Nastran, including support for the 400th, 600th and 700th solution sequences.

Subsystems

Along with interfaces to leading design and calculation systems, Patran has a number of special built-in applications:

  • Patran Thermal – analysis of thermal processes and hydraulic networks;
  • Patran Laminate Modeler – an effective tool for the designer, calculator and technologist to develop, analyze and prepare the production of structures made of laminated composite materials and/or sandwich panels. The application allows you to simulate the lay-out and/or draping of material during manufacturing, transfer information about fiber orientation in each layer of the package to the finite elements of the computational model, calculate on-the-fly under VAT the fracture indices and safety factors for post-processing, create layers reamers, mold surfaces and moulages for production;
  • Analysis Manager is a multifunctional system that manages job execution processes.

You can request a trial version of the full software package for testing. The trial is followed with a technical demonstration aimed on software abilities and focused on your design and manufacturing purposes.
