HVM Impact-Test Preparation: Verify the Design Before the Truck Arrives
A full-scale vehicle impact test is too expensive to use as the first serious design review. Good HVM impact-test preparation should expose avoidable weaknesses before the truck, test barrier and instrumented site are booked.
Define the exact test condition
Preparation starts with the intended rating and a controlled set of inputs: vehicle type, mass, impact speed, angle, impact point and the complete installed configuration. ISO 22343-1:2023 notes that a vehicle security barrier is designed and tested with the assessed vehicle threat, geographical application and intended site location in mind.
That means the model should include more than the visible bollard, blocker or gate. Base plates, anchors, reinforcement, concrete, surrounding ground and critical interfaces all influence how impact loads travel through the system.
Use simulation to make decisions—not claims
During HVM impact-test preparation, nonlinear transient simulation can help engineers examine vehicle-barrier interaction, deformation, load paths, anchor forces and likely failure modes. Variants can then be compared before steel is fabricated or a foundation is cast.
Simulation does not create a certified impact rating. ASTM F2656/F2656M describes computer simulation as a powerful development tool, while cautioning against fielding a product using simulation results alone. The physical test remains the performance evidence; analysis improves the design submitted for that test.
Turn analysis into a test-ready configuration
Useful outputs are practical: reinforce a load path, revise wall thickness, change anchor geometry, strengthen the foundation or confirm which details must be controlled during installation. GloBAS Engineering supports vehicle-impact simulation, structural deformation assessment, material and thickness optimisation, and foundation and anchorage design validation.
Effective HVM impact-test preparation reduces late redesign and gives the test team a clearly defined configuration. If your next barrier design is moving toward physical testing, an early engineering review can help focus time and budget on the strongest candidate.
