Thermal Comfort Is More Than Room Temperature

Thermal comfort CFD analysis helps engineering consultants answer a question that room-average temperatures cannot: how will occupants actually experience the space?

Comfort depends on more than the thermostat setting. Air speed, temperature distribution, radiant effects, diffuser placement, solar loads, occupancy and internal heat gains can create draughts, stagnant zones or uneven conditions even when the overall HVAC capacity appears adequate.

Where CFD adds practical value

For design teams, simulation provides a visual and quantitative view of airflow and temperature across occupied zones. A focused study can support:

  • comparison of diffuser layouts and supply conditions;
  • identification of local hot, cold or low-velocity zones;
  • assessment of airflow interaction with people, equipment and façades;
  • review of design alternatives before drawings are finalised.

Our thermal comfort CFD analysis workflow begins with a review of the available CAD or BIM model and the design questions that need to be answered. We then prepare the geometry, refine the mesh where local flow behaviour matters, define relevant physics and boundary conditions, and compare agreed scenarios.

The output is not simply a set of colourful contours. Results are interpreted in engineering terms, with clear visualisations, observations and practical recommendations for the consultant’s review. A final discussion helps connect the simulation findings with the wider HVAC and project requirements.

External CFD capacity when the project needs it

For multidisciplinary consultancies, external CFD support can extend delivery capacity without creating a permanent specialist workload. It is particularly useful when a deadline is approaching, several options must be assessed quickly, or an independent technical review would reduce design risk.

GloBAS Engineering provides thermal comfort CFD analysis as a focused delivery partner for consulting teams. Explore our engineering and CFD services, or review ASHRAE Standard 55 resources for the broader thermal comfort framework.

If a current project would benefit from an additional CFD perspective, we would be glad to discuss the scope.
